The Doctoral Program in Engineering Sciences aims to train researchers with the ability to develop, apply, and transfer advanced knowledge in engineering sciences through scientific and technological research.

The program is structured around three priority research lines:

  • Intelligent systems, analytics, and operations management: Focuses on the convergence of data science, machine learning, operations management, and information and communication technologies (ICT) for the creation of intelligent systems that contribute to the effective and efficient development of society.
  • Climate, energy, and infrastructure resilience: Focuses on the study, development, and application of advanced solutions aimed at strengthening the structural, energy, and water resilience of infrastructures and critical systems in the face of natural hazards, environmental demands, and demanding operational conditions in sectors such as urban, rural, agricultural, and/or mining.
  • Advanced materials: This line is dedicated to the development, characterization, and optimization of advanced materials, which are fundamental for contemporary technological development.

Program Educational Objectives

The Doctor in Engineering Sciences from UDP will be a highly skilled researcher and expert in their field of specialization, capable of conducting original, autonomous, and rigorous research in the field of engineering sciences, within an ethical framework and integrating scientific and technological knowledge.

They will have the ability to identify and formulate research problems in the field of engineering sciences, design methodological strategies, and apply cutting-edge analytical, computational, and/or experimental tools to validate hypotheses and propose well-founded solutions. Their training will include a critical command of theoretical frameworks, as well as quantitative and qualitative methodologies.

They will develop research and scientific production skills that will enable them to actively participate in collaborative networks at the national and international level, and contribute to the advancement of science and technology through publications in indexed journals, participation in conferences, and involvement in scientific, technological, or industrial outreach initiatives.

Moreover, they will have developed critical thinking skills and the ability to work collaboratively, which will enable them to integrate into international research networks and perform in demanding and competitive academic and professional environments. Therefore, they will be able to work in academia and/or in organizations engaged in research, innovation, and/or technology transfer.

The doctoral program consists of an initial coursework phase, a candidacy exam based on a thesis project, a final thesis development phase, and a thesis defense.

The initial coursework phase lasts 4 semesters and consists of a curriculum that includes mandatory, transversal, and elective courses (fundamental and specialized), specialized modules for academic productivity, presentation and discussion of scientific articles, and autonomous research projects. The initial phase concludes with the approval of the qualification exam and the thesis project.

The “Research Seminars I and II” in the curriculum will enable students to become familiar with the different dimensions of research in engineering sciences: bibliographic study, identification of unresolved problems and ways to address them, development of research proposals, techniques and tools for data analysis, critical analysis and discussion of results, and the presentation of results in specialized journals and oral presentations.

The “Research Seminar III” consists of research work under the supervision of an advisor and focuses on developing research aimed at presenting the thesis project and a conference paper. Finally, the “Research Seminar IV” module (25 credits) is designed for the doctoral student, under the guidance of their Thesis Director, to prepare their research project, which will be evaluated at the Qualification Exam.

The final thesis development phase lasts 4 semesters and concludes with the thesis defense milestone. The thesis work is mostly autonomous but includes regular meetings with the Thesis Director as part of the Doctoral Thesis modules

  • Doctoral Curriculum

The program is aimed at individuals with a background in engineering or related disciplines with a scientific and technological foundation, who wish to further their studies to pursue a research career in the field of engineering sciences.

The minimum requirement for application is to hold an academic degree of Bachelor’s or master’s in engineering, Sciences, or other related fields. In the case of foreign academic degrees, they must be equivalent to the aforementioned degrees. The selection process will consider the applicant’s academic track record and orientation toward advanced research, the alignment between their research interests and the program’s research lines, and their capacity to undertake a program of high dedication and demand (full-time availability during the 4 years of the study plan; reading comprehension in English at an intermediate or advanced level).

  • Research proposal specifying the research problem, justification, and methodological approach (2,000 words). In addition, a potential advisor from the doctoral faculty must be identified.
  • Official transcripts of undergraduate and postgraduate studies, if applicable.
  • Certificate of undergraduate graduation ranking.
  • Degree certificates of Bachelor’s and Master’s (if applicable).
  • Proof of English language proficiency
  • Two letters of recommendation.

Pre-selected applicants will be invited to an interview with members of the program’s academic committee.
