Starting from Husserl&#8217;s somewhat controversial claim about the immortality of the constituting subjectivity, this thesis uses the limit-case of death in order to present a phenomenological exploration of the notion of subjectivity and its relationshop to nature. It also offers a second-order discussion about the method and nature of phenomenology in the face of naturalism. The main conclusion of the research is that, in order to make sence of death while abiding by Husserlian methodological rules, it is necessary to reconsider the notion of subjectivity.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In the context of a general revaluation of the Neo-Kantian movement that is taken place in contemporary philosophy, the present investigation aims at reconstructing and working out the consequences of the philosophical project of the founding father of the Neo-Kantian Baden School: Wilhem Windelband.</p>
<p>Windelband&#8217;s philosophical program aimed at synthesizing two opposing forces operating in nineteenth-century philosophical thinking, namely, trascendental Philsophy and historical consciousness. Due to Wildelband&#8217;s peculiar aim, I believe that his philosophy has a twofold relevance. On the one hand, Windelband&#8217;s effectively deals, within a Kantian framework, with a set of problems that cannot find an adequate answer in the core Kantian texts. The fact is that those problems, which arose as a consequence of the consolidation of history as a scientific discipline, were not a component of Kant&#8217;s own philosophical and cultural landscape. On the other hand, the absence of a definitive solution to the tension mentioned above, far from being a failure presents us with the opportunity to consider the problem of relating trascendental, or systematical, approaches and historical approaches in one of its most dramatic forms.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This study goes beyond the analysis of the causes of the emergence of populist actors in the party system, focusing instead on those cases in which populism and its counterpart anti-populism, translate into an ideological and discursive divide that contributes to structuring a certain party system. When populism/antipopulism emerges as a political cleavage, the factors behind parties&#8217; political choices in general and electoral coalition preferences in particular, can be affected. For this new cleavage, to start to polarize, a change in the political opportunity structure is needed. In fact, when the political opportunity structure opens as a consequence of events external to the party system new actors may enter the system, producing a change in the dynamic of competition. Moreover, considering the organizational density of the parties in the system, defined as the power of penetration of a given party, in terms of both intensity and reach, this dissertation can shed light on the likely duration not only of the parties but also of the cleavage.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The aim of this research is to contribute to the academic discussion on the problem universities face regarding their capacity to function as integrated organisations. This study analyses the universities’ capacity to coordinate different internal interests based on common aims. Three Chilean institutions were considered: a state university; a traditional private university and a private university. The evidence demonstrates different scenarios for internal strategic alignment are mainly influenced by the power balance produced between the three institutional governance components: the upper-level managerial body; the central administration and the faculties. This balance is conditioned by three factors: first; the governance arrangements that regulate the power balance between the three internal governance components and their capacity to promote coherence and alignment. The second element is associated with the individual capacities of those who exercise high-up or mid-level managerial positions; whether individuals or collegiate. The results show that personal skills and proficiency can either boost or weaken the role of the authorities and their degree of influence in decision-making. The third factor is linked to the individual interests that motivate the behaviour and preferences of those who form part of the three institutional governance components.</p>

Using a qualitative methodology informed by the work of Foucault and feminist epistemologies, this study contributes to identifying diverse discourses that impact the transition experiences of women from technical and vocational education. 										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The research examines, within the Chilean context, the link between school stratification processes and curricular differentiation between the scientific-humanistic and technical- professional modalities (HC and TP, respectively), considering the organizational variations in their provision (specialized or versatile). The focus is on identifying whether coupling both study modalities in the same educational unit reduces the unequal distribution of students based on socioeconomic status and the gaps in access to higher education between HC and TP groups.</p>
<p>By introducing the organizational dimension in the investigation of the effects of curricular differentiation in secondary education, the study highlights the importance of system designs and school practices in amplifying or reducing educational inequities. The results indicate that versatility tends to only partially attenuate the magnitude of the undesired effects of curricular differentiation, without being associated with a more comprehensive perspective on the development of secondary education offerings.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The impact of a university&#8217;s quality is highly significant as it will have positive or negative externalities on the future trajectories of its students. Therefore, exploring the development processes that allow an institution to overcome the &#8220;valley of death&#8221; and achieve consolidation is key to guiding the emerging independent private universities that have arisen to meet the massification of higher education.</p>
<p>Hence, it is pertinent to inquire about the decisions made by some independent private universities in Chile that, in the face of environmental complexities, manage to become high-performing institutions. This means having efficient governance to achieve institutional goals, implementing concrete actions to fulfill their academic purposes, and having a financially sustainable business model. All of this translates into recognition from regulators (accreditation) and social status (high rankings in national and international rankings).</p>
<p>To answer this question, the theories that form the conceptual basis for this research are analyzed, which are approached from three theoretical perspectives: the Political Economy of Higher Education, Organizational Development, and University Governance and Agency Theory.</p>
<p>The Political Economy of Higher Education reflects on our tertiary education system and its political economy foundations under different incentive schemes. On the other hand, from the theoretical perspective of Organizational Development, the different evolutionary stages of institutions are presented from their inception to either their demise or consolidation.</p>
<p>Furthermore, University Governance (UG) and Agency Theory (AT) are explored based on their theoretical assumptions. UG is seen as one of the key factors for achieving institutional consolidation, while AT is used as an analytical tool to identify good practices of internal governance.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>How do the processes of social inclusion/exclusion of boys and girls unfold in an &#8220;inclusive&#8221; school located in a marginalized context? Three specific objectives are proposed, configuring different perspectives: (1) the adults, school dynamics, and power devices; (2) the relationships between adults and children, identifying appropriations and resistances; (3) the children and their unique processes of subjectivation. The methodology used is school ethnography, conducted over 7 months in a marginalized school in Santiago de Chile, with a focus on a 4th-grade class. It is defined as interpretative and visual, incorporating meanings and intersubjective relationships in the field, and deploying devices of children&#8217;s visual production (photography and drawing). The results have been cross-referenced to reveal five assemblages that delineate the main territories and frontiers of social inclusion/ exclusion: life/death (territory of destructiveness), creativity/school knowledge (territory of object-knowledge), feminine/masculine (territory of emotionality), actual/virtual (territory of digital culture), and childhood/adulthood (territory of authority). These four cartographies allow us to understand how the processes of inclusion/exclusion of children unfold in this marginalized context and to question Chilean educational policies.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This research focuses on the relationship between higher education and the world of work to situate and examine dynamics of change and organizational adaptation of Chilean universities through the development of new management capacities associated with a global employability agenda.To this end; the emergence and spread of employability as a concept; practice and political instrument in higher education worldwide was analysed. The Chilean case was looked into as an iconic example of the economic transformations that the global university sector is currently experimenting. A detailed empiric examination of the main aspects of the discourses on employability in Chile was carried out. The national scenario was described in terms of the insertion and functioning of new management capacities to boost employability at universities. Finally; the origin; development and status of these organisational capacities in relation to the evolution of the formal structure of said organisations was studied in depth.The results allow for the visualisation of significant effects of pressures that comes from universities’ institutional environments. At the same time; it reveals ways in which market disputes become opaque and are ideologically neutralised under the blanket of supposedly shared global aspirations; such as what occurs with the employability agenda.</p>

In the second qualitative phase, two cases were studied to characterize how classroom dimensions operated together to enable or constrain the emergence of new ideas in the classroom.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The question that gives rise to this doctoral research is: How do collaborative activities among children unfold in the classroom, and how does this unfolding relate to their sociocultural conditions? To address this question, it is understood that collaboration among children is a complex activity in which learning is generated (Vygotsky, 1987; Piaget, 2008; Rogoff, 1998). Furthermore, it is considered that the way this unfolding occurs is directly related to the sociocultural conditions in which this activity takes place (Rogoff, 1998) and to the interpretive reading and/or reproduction (Corsaro, 2010) that children, individually and collectively, make of those conditions.</p>
<p>Based on this understanding of collaboration, the aim is to shed light on the educational system regarding how to increase and enhance the presence of collaboration among children in school, boost children’s agency in their learning, and promote the development of the learning required for the 21st century, as described by Delors and Mufti (1996): learning to know, learning to do, learning to live together, and learning to be.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This research explores how undergraduate programmes in early childhood education in Chile have contributed to the construction of a knowledge base relevant to the profession. As a descriptive multiple case study; it analyses the evolution of the plans of study in five programmes; between 1981 and 2015. Relying on major theoretical perspectives on professionalism; the analysis emphasizes the attributes of the knowledge base of professionalism; and the role of universities in constructing and transmitting the professions’ knowledge base. Findings show that undergraduate preparation has gone through three phases involving different conceptualizations on early childhood teachers: technical (1944-1967); teaching specialty (1968-1998); and profession (1999-2015). Furthermore; the five cases have not been able to construct a theoretically solid knowledge base. Nor have they been able to decisively incorporate three largely agreed-upon elements of their identity knowledge; or to satisfactorily resolve tensions regarding their own knowledge base. Remarkably; different theoretical perspectives on professionalism point in the same direction. This research concludes that the five cases have had little influence on constructing their own knowledge base. Thus; the evolution of their plans of study has been similar to a process of professionalization driven “from above” being the Ministry of Education the leading actor.</p>

This is reflected in an increase in coverage, diversity of educational offerings, and heterogeneity of the student population. However, this does not always lead to an equivalent improvement in [&#8230;]]]></description>
										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The growing number of academic programs and the quantity of higher education institutions offering them is a phenomenon present in different parts of the world today. This is reflected in an increase in coverage, diversity of educational offerings, and heterogeneity of the student population. However, this does not always lead to an equivalent improvement in quality, which has led to the establishment of external control methods and demands for public accountability. As a result, to address these demands, forms of managing processes and quality assurance systems have been created.</p>
<p>This thesis focuses on the scenario of higher education in Chile and the integration of new university actors into its institutions. In this country, this occurred amid a process of change, a crisis of trust in these institutions, and adjustments in how their quality was regulated.</p>
<p>Quality administrators are now positioned in new university substructures specialized in the function of educational quality management, known as quality assurance units.</p>
<p>During the process of defining their role, a shared identity among quality administrators does not emerge. Until now, this identity has seemed to be primarily based on the common obstacles they must face and the constant efforts they must make to validate their work in the academic sphere. They feel that they have to accept the invisible value of their function within the university. During this process of defining their identity and in an environment where the identity of the &#8220;others&#8221; (the academics) is more defined and deeply rooted in their discipline, this new actor uses strategies to help reduce their own anxiety regarding their loosely defined role.</p>

This shift in focus has resulted in an increasing rejection of the market-based model that was imposed during the military dictatorship (1973-1990).</p>
<p>President Michelle Bachelet&#8217;s government program (2014-2018) prioritized free and inclusive education, the elimination of profit-seeking in educational institutions, and the strengthening of state-provided education at its core.</p>
<p>For many, including politicians, academics, and students, the goal was to restore the concept of the &#8216;Teaching State,&#8217; which had inspired educational policies in the Republic before the military coup. In recent years, considerable attention has been given to the issues of Chilean higher education from a market perspective, highlighting the influence of neoliberal ideology on educational segregation and the interference of economic interests seeking to profit from the governance and management of higher education institutions.</p>
<p>However, a comprehensive institutional history of Chilean higher education, depicting the evolution and continuity of the system&#8217;s regulations and state policies, considering both the public and private sectors across various constitutional cycles up to the present day, remains unwritten. This thesis aims to fill that gap and provide an institutional perspective on the history of Chilean higher education.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The present study aimed to characterize and analyze university teaching training programs in Chile, as well as to evaluate their impact on participating teachers and their respective students. To achieve this, interviews were conducted with the coordinators of these programs, and an impact evaluation model was developed and implemented for a specific case. This model was based on available international references but aimed to overcome their main limitations.</p>
<p>In general terms, it is concluded that in Chile, university teaching training programs are similar to each other and do not directly adhere to a clearly defined theoretical model specific to the field of Higher Education. On the other hand, when analyzing the effect of training on teachers and students for a specific program, positive impacts were observed only after one year of training. In these cases, teachers demonstrated a teaching approach more focused on their students&#8217; learning compared to their peers who had not participated in such training. Additionally, their respective students showed a higher usage of deep learning strategies rather than surface learning strategies.</p>
<p>The study concludes by proposing a university teaching training program based on a theoretical model specific to the field of Higher Education. Furthermore, this proposal considers the main findings of the research to enhance its impact on improving teaching and learning processes.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The objective of this research is to understand and interpret the initial teacher training in assessment and the discourse about classroom and national assessment with which pedagogy students graduate. Teacher training is studied in three universities: a state university, a traditional private university, and a post-eighties private university. In each university, threeacademic programs are addressed: language teaching, mathematics teaching, and elementary education. The prescribed curriculum for each academic program was analyzed, and final-year students and academics involved in teacher training were interviewed.</p>
<p>A common element in different academic programs is that the declared focus of training in assessment is constructivist. However, when developing various aspects of the evaluation process, behavioral elements are mixed with constructivist ones. Additionally, the formative function of assessment is emphasized in the course; however, the focus is on designing assessment instruments rather than providing descriptive feedback to students, which is a fundamental element of formative assessment. The designed assessment instruments are not applied, so they are not empirically tested, nor is the information about learning that can be obtained from their application analyzed. During the practice in school establishments, future teachers must adapt to the school&#8217;s rules, conducting traditional, summative assessment for grading purposes. In this formative space, they cannot innovate or learn in action what is theoretically communicated to them at the university, deepening the practical weakness of the training.</p>
<p>When analyzing the meanings of assessment among academics and pedagogy students, it is observed that the training conveys a similar view of classroom assessment among the institutions and academic programs studied. Three central propositions organize the meanings of assessment among academics and pedagogy students: assessment is a process; evaluating is not just grading; assessment must be fair. Based on this, future teachers consider that the best evaluative practice is informal, fully immersed in the process, and without any negative consequences for students. However, information from other research indicates that this informal practice can be arbitrary and reproduce social differences.</p>
<p>The problems in the training can be interpreted from the tension between the formative purpose and the selective purpose of assessment, which ultimately is an unresolved tension in an inclusive mass education system that coexists with the selective tradition of the system.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Within the framework of the enactment of a set of educational policies by the State aimed at promoting greater equity and quality in the school system, this research delves into the implementation of inclusive school policies by special education teachers.</p>
<p>This qualitative research was conducted in two phases: in the first stage, 10 special education teachers from the Metropolitan Region were interviewed, and subsequently, in a second phase, a case study was conducted with 2 teachers, following an ethnographic orientation for an academic semester.</p>
<p>Tensions in the identity of these teachers are identified, as well as contradictions and multiple barriers to the implementation of legislations. Additionally, evidence was found of the development of counter-conducts and resistances by these educators, in response to demands from their schools related to the standardization of students for the SIMCE assessment and the referral of students with greater learning difficulties to special education establishments.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This study explores the processes of policy transfer of Qualifications Frameworks in Chile and Colombia, from the perspective of Europeanization of higher education. Its general objective was to compare the policy transfer processes of National Qualifications Frameworks in Chile and Colombia, analyzing their possible isomorphism with the European Qualifications Framework. The study uses a descriptive methodology with a multiple case design. Data collection was conducted through document analysis and interviews with three groups involved in their development. Based on this, policy transfer maps were created for Chile and Colombia, distinguishing the moments of transnational attraction, design, and implementation.</p>
<p>The results show the existence of Europeanization processes in Colombia and the effects of domestic opportunism in both countries. In particular, the impact of the technical characteristics of the Frameworks, their complexity, and their adjustments to local structures, as elements of policies, and coercion, the role of international experts, and the phenomenon of isomorphism are analyzed as variables of the frameworks. In summary, all these variables are used to understand the failure of the Chilean and Colombian Qualifications Systems.</p>

When selecting access to a particular type of education, a criterion is applied that excludes some from its benefits. This raises a moral issue that concerns the legitimacy of such a criterion. There is nothing in this problem that can be considered natural or obvious. University selection is a specific design, historically conditioned, a technology constructed by society under certain concepts and biases, which generally seeks to somehow isolate and measure individual merit and use it as an access criterion.</p>
